Look! Mom's Dishes! ...Connections To Our Past

Sometimes I think I have the best job in the world, getting to work with beautiful
china pieces day in and day out...sometimes it actually feels more like a privilege
than an actual profession. After all, each of these plates and cups and saucers
and other dinnerware pieces all have history behind them. They come from
many different countries, from all around the world, and their beautiful
patterns and colors give them a unique appeal that brings them to life
unlike other ordinary household objects.

We remember dishes.
They're a part of our family in some ways, a part of each of our own personal histories.
Have you not once in your life been somewhere, maybe an antique market or
thrift shop, and come across an orphaned plate or cup that you instantly
recognized from somewhere in your own past?

At that moment of recognition, it isn't just "a plate" or "a cup," but mom's plate,
or grandmother's cup. There is a connection. Often when that connection is
made we find ourselves flooded with memories of family from long ago,
or of our childhood, or of holidays and times past. If you're the
sentimental type like I amit can be a comforting experience.

I've been working with dishes for so long now that I know the patterns by name.
No, I don't talk to them, but in a way, they speak to me. I see them as
valuable, not monetarily valuable, but valuable in a way that fills your
soul with warmth and peace just as memories of loved ones do.
This was, after all, someone's grandmother's plate.
Someone just like you.

China Plate Wall Displays: Cheap and Easy!

Plate walls are simple to make and cost next to nothing - they are also no longer limited to kitchen or living room walls...

But I don't have any plates!
Find them at yard sales, thrift shops, or online.

I don't know where to start!
To coordinate plates with your room, pick a color from your room's  decor - your rug or curtain fabric, and go from there. Or, you might want to contrast plates with your wall color. Check out this collection of wall displays and be inspired!

How to hang plates:
You don't need any type of fancy-schmancy plate hanger mechanisms!  You don't want to use those anyway. They are irritating!  All you need is some E6000 and large paper clips. Perfect!

Vintage Monogram China Made Into Jewelry!

I love these vintage ads!

Vintage advertisement for monogrammed china

I just LOVE vintage advertisements. I especially love vintage ads featuring china or flatware! I always find myself squinting at the ads I come across, trying to make out the china pattern or silver pattern, wondering if its one I have in stock for my jewelry making.

I think on two occasions Ive found ads for patterns that were the same as or very similar to dishes that I had in stockOne was a Limoges U.S.A. ad for a set of monogrammed floral china. I love these old initial monogram patterns. Over the years I have found some orphaned pieces here and there but for the most part these patterns are hard to find!

Here are a few pieces of jewelry that I created with damaged vintage monogrammed china:

Necklace pendant from vintage A monogrammed china

Vintage and antique monogrammed china is hard to find, but once in a while I come across some that is cracked or chipped or damaged from age or use, and that is what I turn into jewelry.

I think I currently have the letters M and K in stock, if you are interested in any pieces similar to those shown above, check out my Etsy shop! Here is the link:
