how do you support your decorating habit?

Chicago interior designer David Hopkins has put together a fabulous space for himself - mostly from found items, resale bargains and craigslist pieces. To support his buying habit,
he sublets his two one-bedroom apartments and sleeps in a large coat closet.

And we thought we had it bad...

Check out the article by Tate Gunnerson in The New York Times, and be sure to see
the slideshow of all the photos.

time? or money?

I found this quote from Elaine Griffin recently while going through some of my old decor magazine tear sheets:

"Time and money are inversely proportinate -
to spend less of one you must always spend exponentially more of the other."

So true, don't you think?

I'm a really big spender of time when it comes to decor.
More fun that way.

What about you?

change, change is gonna do you good...

grant gibson's apartment earlier
and later

Some folks are perfectly good with furnishing a home once and for all. And that's ok...just not for us design/decor-types, right?

Gotta change. Gotta re-do. Gotta re-fresh.
ALL THE TIME.

As I stumble over paint cans and recently moved furniture, I have to wonder how many of us are so afflicted? Is it a blessing? or a curse? After all, the only constant in my house is change; and that
creates a little chaos.

How about you? how often do you need a little (or a lot) of freshness?

,

where do you spend your decorating dollar?

all these awesome antique french chests are from 1st Dibs

Something old and french has my eye right now. No, not a bottle of wine. A chest for my bedroom. I found an awesome one in a local shop over the weekend but the price tag knocked the wind out of me. I think I could furnish a room or two for the price of that one piece.

That got me thinking...where do we put our large decorating dollars? rugs? art? case pieces? You know me...I delight in a bargain. But are there times when you just gotta go for it...?

our passion for design...

my favorite project of Lauren's
a blown up print on her dining room wall

Did you hear the Skirted Roundtable's recent interview with Lauren Liess of Pure Style Home? I highly recommend it; she gives awesome home design tips, and she sounds as fun and lovely as she seems on her blog. She mentioned that she graduated from college with a degree in Communications, I believe, and only after spending all her time at work doodling interiors did she realize that her real passion was in interior design.

Does that ring a bell with you? It really did with me. I am not a designer but it certainly is my passion. Yet I ended up with a degree in English and working in the law field. I have a good friend who would make a top notch architect, yet her passion and clarity for that field surfaced long after her college days.

Lauren's entry

What about you? Were you attuned to your passion for design early on? Or, was it 'discovered' or 'uncovered' later, after another career?  If so, why can't we tap into these leanings earlier? Is there a  growth process that leads us to our true passion?

Thanks so much for your input! Since I began this blog, I have been fascinated by the number of folks/bloggers who come to design from another area, especially law...
