our word for today: 'girandole'

I saw a great pair of tall antique candlesticks in an antique shop that are kinda like this one.
I've since learned that these are called 'girandole' candlesticks: French or Italian ornamental, branched candle holders.

I've never had just the right thing for my mantel and I thought a pair of these would look terrific flanking a super-sized piece of abstract art - in black and white, of course.

So, maybe I'll save my pennies and get a pair. Lemme know if you see any bargains out there.

abstract art and an antique

image from My Notting Hill

I hadn't even opened my new Southern Living when I spotted this image from the recent magazine on Michelle's blog My Notting Hill.

I flipped for that great piece of abstract art by Charlottesville, Virginia artist Kiki Slaughter. Paired with the antique console, the art really shines.

I just had to see a few more pieces from Kiki's site:

rain dance

haze

azure

Yummy, huh? Any one of these would look terrific over an antique piece.

Remnants of the Past weekend..

I am excited to say that we have skipped town for the weekend to enjoy a little girl time.  I will be staying in the Central Coast this weekend and attending the Remnants of the Past show.  So excited to see some good friends and hopefully meet some new ones.

Wishing you a wonderful Saturday!

trophy cups

via tear it out

I'm such a nut for old engraved trophys or loving cups, as they are sometimes called. Love the one above used as a vase. I have a collection of old copper trophy cups and I'm always trying to figure out the best use for them. This week I'm putting them in the kitchen to hold utensils and old silver. Next week...who knows...?

where do you spend your decorating dollar?

all these awesome antique french chests are from 1st Dibs

Something old and french has my eye right now. No, not a bottle of wine. A chest for my bedroom. I found an awesome one in a local shop over the weekend but the price tag knocked the wind out of me. I think I could furnish a room or two for the price of that one piece.

That got me thinking...where do we put our large decorating dollars? rugs? art? case pieces? You know me...I delight in a bargain. But are there times when you just gotta go for it...?

the wow factor

I'm a firm believer that the most interesting decor pieces come from thrift and antique stores. I love mixing vintage with new things, but I'll take patina and quirkyness over new and mass-produced any day. Every day.

But could I please just catch a break like this....? The painting pictured above was purchased recently for $3 from a Goodwill store less than an hour from my home. Last Saturday, the painting sold for $190,000 at auction. Geez. Turns out it's a Flemish piece from around 1650.

Nice to know this does really happen. Now, if I could only have it happen to me...
